En- joying a relaxed professional atmosphere including an excellent library and weekly seminars featuring world-class AI researchers, the researchers at NCARAI take pride in both contributing to the frontiers of AI research and developing relevant AI techniques to solve current and future Navy problems. Our campus-like facili- ties include such state-of-the-art equipment as LMI Nu Machines, Xerox Dolphins, and Sun Workstations, as well as VAX 11/780's and 11/750's and assorted graphics and image display devices. The Center is a branch of the Information Technology Division, Naval Research Laboratory, with access to a diversity of talents and other resources vital to productive AI research and applications. Providing an intellectually stimulating environment, the Center performs fundamental research in many areas of Artificial Intel- ligence including expert systems, knowledge acquisition, natural language understanding, and distributed problem solving. Results of ongoing research are typically tied to such application areas as expert systems for electronic troubleshooting, message under- standing, resource allocation and planning, multi-sensor informa- tion integration, and more. It is not unusual for researchers from such diverse fields of study as Computer Science, Mathemat- ics, Psychology, and Linguistics to interact deeply with one another on a daily basis. Positions currently available at the Center are in the following areas: GROUP LEADER Candidates should have a demonstrated capability in the formulation, direction, implementation, and completion of a multiperson team project in AI. STAFF SCIENTIST Candidates should have demonstrated the ability to conduct research in AI and to implement large AI systems. VISITING SCIENTIST These are positions for those who meet the criterion of either the Group Leader or the Staff Scientist but wish to have a one- or two- year appointment. These positions are particularly designed for qualified researchers from academia, industry, or other U.S. government groups.
