All our modems have been set to disable remote initiation of self-test mode, which is thought to be the cause of the problem. I'd like to know whether it still occurs. (All right, I'll talk, I'll talk: the "marching umber hulks" is a problem seen only when dialed in at 1200 baud. Suddenly the other end starts spraying U's at you as fast as it can send, and there's no way to break it out of this state except to hang up the phone and dial in again.
