By far, the one receiving the most votes was Sony's TCD-5M. The unit (now discontinued) lists for $795. I found it in Cambridge, MA (Briggs & Briggs music) for $600. I've owned it for 2 days now and love it! Using a relatively inexpensive Sony mic (ECM-939LT), I've made some respectable recordings of acoustic piano. Used as a tape deck (aux in), the results were similarly impressive. And I'm not even using metal tape (yet). I am NOT an audiophile. But I am a fussy musician with a good ear. I have no reservations about recommending it to others looking for a portable unit. Thanks again, Karl
