Allow me to quote Leonard Feldman in the Audio Magazine May, 1984
issue test of the Hitachi DA-800:
"Let me begin by stating in no uncertain terms that the DA-800 is
vastly superior in its performance and features to the first-
generation CD player, the DA-1000, offered by Hitachi more than a
year ago.  The earlier model, one of the first players I tested,
proved to be so erratic that I had to ask for a second sample to
obtain satisfactory readings and reliable performance.  Clearly,
Hitachi has learned a great deal about CD players since that first
attempt."
This seems to amply explain the current low price. On the other
hand, you <could> gamble that Hitachi finally fixed its problems
and you would get a good one.  You might want to look up the
original test of the DA-1000. Its in the January, 1983 issue of 
Audio available at your library (probably). That article ends
with the following Editor's note:
"This DA-1000 was a late preproduction unit built by hand instead
of on the line, and its measurements may possibly not be up to those
of actual production samples.  We will test a production unit as
soon as possible and report any differences."
In the May, 1983 issue there is a short article on the second unit
tested which indicated that it worked ok (unlike the first) and
its "specs" were improved by at least an order of magnitude in
those categories reprinted. Maybe, just maybe, this is an ok
design that was "killed" by the bad initial review of a defective
