Nak long ago said it prefers Dolby C or its own version of Dolby C, High-Com II, to dbx. I believe one of the reasons they cited was unacceptable noise level pumping ("breathing") which is mostly eliminated by the former systems' two-band NR scheme. The other may be price, at least at the time Nak decided. dbx now uses a single chip for its vca and detection circuitry. 3-4 years ago dbx was a large amount of discrete components, about 50-80 per channel. However, dolby C can apparently be made from the appropriate cascading of 2 readily available dolby B chips plus a small amount of external parts, which reduces mfg changeover costs.
