Never depend on the Park autotrans setting for parking
Alawys use the hand(parking) brake.
By the way, when parking at the curb in NYC, its a good idea
to leave the car (manual or autotrans) in neutral, in case
the person in front or behind decides they need more room
to get out. This may save some transmission repairs!
