I flew a Cessna 421 in the late 70's that was equipped with a "Wolfsburg" (or something like that) mobile phone. I also recall seeing a Mooney factory demonstrator around that time with the same equipment in a single. The 2 major draw backs were (are?): 1) $, a quick call home can eat up 20 bucks. 2) figuring out which ground station is in range and will remain in range for the duration of the call.
