Hekmets ARE useful and now ARE required for many if not most competitions
in this country. An aquaintance who is hardly a wimp wore a Bell helmet
racing when they were still considered pretty wimpy -- real men's heads
are full of rocks anyway. He crashed badly, skidding head first into a
curbstone, and was unhurt except for the road rash. I'm told that the
pain of road rash can only be fully appreciated WITHOUT brain damage.

On the down side, a coworker explained that he no longer rides to work
since a friend was bumped off the road and went head first into a steel
pole. He survived but cannot function very well. He was not wearing a
helmet.
