Certainly, I never had any problem in New York City, but then maybe that is because the average speed is frequently 5 mi/hr :-). Having a strap loose should not be too much of a problem, but I kept them tight in NYC. After some practice, there is no problem quickly loosening a strap when necessary. Concerning a slipping wheel, I keep the straps fairly tight in snow and take my chances; it is easier than trying to get the foot in when the rear wheel slips easily. For cyclocross I can see not being strapped in tightly, but even there I use clips and straps. Actually, racers should take a foot out at red lights in order to get practice getting the foot in quickly on startup. George Tomasevich
