Two thoughts: First, impact protection when you get sent headfirst is virtually nil, since the helmet is open in the center. It only protects against scrapes; I think a good helmet should give some impact cushioning as well. Second, consider the small-but-significant possibility that the fingers that go toward the center of the helmet can catch on something as you're flopping around.
