Two thoughts:  First, impact protection when you get sent headfirst is
virtually nil, since the helmet is open in the center.  It only protects
against scrapes; I think a good helmet should give some impact cushioning
as well.  Second, consider the small-but-significant possibility that the
fingers that go toward the center of the helmet can catch on something as
you're flopping around.  I'd like to know how likely that really is, 'cause
the thought of what would happen is slightly nauseating.
