Let me suggest ANYTHING written by Will Cuppy.  He is responsible
for some of the most interesting essays on historical topics I've
ever read.  He seemed to specialize in acquiring obscure facts
and placing "unusual" interpretations on them.  The only title I
remember is:

        The Rise and Fall of Practically Everything

(approximation....)
