We've owned a RCA VCR for about four years.  We mainly use RCA VK250.
I've noticed that most other brands of tape (JVC, Maxell, TDK) make a sort
of scratchy sound as you rewind/fast forward.  Haven't noticed any signs
of head wear yet.  (Then again we only tape about three hours a week and
playback, say, about five hours a week.)
