If you want to get "tree ears" at an oriental market, don't call them "tree ears". They won't know what you are referring to. Call them "black fungus", and they'll lead you to them right away. I just went through this experience last week. The store I was at had two types; small, all black fungus; and large white topped, black bottomed fungus. YUMM!
