I'm new to this newsgroup, so forgive me if this has been mentioned 
before. The book "Cryptography and Data Security" by Dorothy E. 
Denning (published in 1981-82 or thereabouts) is pretty good. It's a 
textbook, and therefore doesn't provide too much in the way of 
startling revelations, however, as a newcomer to cryptography, I found 
it contains some very helpful information.
