Leventhal's followup. The focus of my note correlating Nazism with the history of democratic institutions was concerned with the subversion of what I regard as reasonable govenrmental ideals, NOT (for a change) with antisemitism. Unfortunately I failed to make this clear. I feel much more comfortable accusing Italy in WW II of fascism than of an unusual level of anti-semitism. Leventhal's correlation of the size of jewish populations with the strength of antisemitism is very striking. Poland's extraordinary efficiency (greater than Germany's) in killing most of its 3 million Jews is particularly difficult to understand. Finally, please note that my proposed correlation is with the history (and thus ingrown depth) of democratic institutions, not with current social structure. I believe that a country that has built its support institutions over hundreds of years is less likely to turn to extreme forms of government. - Toby Robison (not Robinson!) allegra!eosp1!robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison princeton!eosp1!robison
