A tip I have heard often is DO NOT record the message
yourself.  Have someone else record it for you.  That
way it sounds more like an answering service than
an answering machine.  Anyone can do it, a friend,
someone with a good voice.  I'm sure someone you 
know would be flattered to do it for you.

I have also seen prerecorded tapes with messages.
Some are serious, some have imitations of famous
people's voices, some are jokes.
