I believe that UNC has the right to restrict people's access to the net from UNC accounts, for the very reason that when you submit to the net from a site, you are taken as a representative of that site. When you abuse that right, it can cause other people at that site embarassment. Some people mention how other students at UNC were quick to "turn Tim in". There might be a reason for this. I'm surprised at how quick people are to jump on the faculty at UNC. They do not owe Tim a job there. They offered him one, on the condition that he would not post to the net. I've seen the postings that got him in trouble, and frankly, I can't blame them. >From his own side of the story, it seems obvious that he tried to push the limits every way he could, even when they were about to restore his priveleges. If in the end, the faculty at UNC acted with less than ultimate patience, who can blame them? I'm sure you will never hear UNC's side of this story, and for good reason. So stop judging the situation. I think Tim Maroney is smart and has done some interesting work. I just wish he would grow up. Wm Leler formerly at UNC.
