re reason for use of gender as proxy for life expectancy
well, the most obvious reason (to me) is that it's harder to lie
about one's gender than about one's smoking/eating/etc habits.
i hear that some insurance companies are now offering discounts
to nonsmokers; wanna bet there aren't any smokers trying to take
advantage?
