(although the orbit is very close to circular). The earth is closest to the sun, and hence moving fastest, in January. The earth is farthest from the sun, and hence moving most slowly in July. Therefore winter in the southern hemisphere lasts a bit longer than winter in the northern hemisphere. Thus the north pole gets a bit more sun than the south pole. William Hughes
