There are several people on the net interested in statistics because of the close relationship between it and computing. Theoretical statistics is also interesting on its own merit. The group (net.stat) would be used mainly for discussion of statistical software. Many discussions would probably center around S, the interactive statistics system developed by Becker and Chambers at Bell Labs. Another segment of the group would be similar to net.math in that discussions of theoretical aspects of statistics would take place. We have monitored net.math and have decided that it is not an appropriate forum for us. I expect there are also several USENET sites that have many users who would be interested in discussions of statistical software even though they are not statisticians per se.
