The raster extensions provide for three major things: 1) Access to color/intensity lookup tables 2) A polygon primitive which can have several new attributes specifying how it is to be filled, 3) Hidden lines and surfaces These extensions are adequate for many purposes, but they don't and were not intended to support things like imaging.
