The name "Little Orphan Annie" is taken from an obscure poem by (I
believe) James Whitcomb Riley. Annie was originally "Otto" - yeah, a HE.
But when the editor looked over the cartoonist's works, something didn't
seem right. He finally figured it out: Otto was too - effeminate.
The cartoonist agreed, and Otto became Annie.
