It is still illegal to be gay in some states. Also, a lot of people can lose their jobs if it is dis- covered that they're gay. The point is taken that one need not be gay to argue for equal rights for gays; I'm a good example of that. My guess is that the anonymous poster is gay, but trying to stay employed. When one is trying to conceal such a fact from one's employers (and the general public), one may want to keep a low pro- file. Not everyone will buy the "I'm straight but I'm for gay rights" line. Me, I don't care what you think. If you want to suspect that I'm gay, go right ahead. You want to make gay jokes? That's your right, I guess, we do have the right to free speech ("as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it"); but don't expect us to keep quiet.
