If the tantrum is over something the kid wants to do that the parent thinks is inappropriate (such as crayoning on the wall), the best thing to do is to let it run its course. Tantrums over frustration over inability to communicate are more difficult to deal with, as the more upset the kid is, the more inarticulate he/she gets. You have to know what works with your own kid.
