Actually, my memory is not that I told them the goto was evil, only that they could not use it for the course, on the theory that "Jail is liberating", to paraphrase Brooks. I wanted them to learn some discipline first, the dirty real world could come later. Methinks it worked from the comment that triggered this exchange!
