This is a plea that I hope will head off a lot of wasted newsgroup 
bandwidth: please do not engage in discussions in "net.lang" about Latin;
there is a newsgroup set aside for precisely this topic and related ones:
"net.nlang" (note the additional "n", as in 'Natural LANGuages').
If the topic of derivations of abbreviations interests you,
you will be pleased to discover that "e.g." has been discussed ad nauseam
in that newsgroup for the last two weeks.  

Aside from being in an inappropriate newsgroup, the posting to which
I am responding had the additional disadvantages of spelling and translating
the Latin incorrectly.  Again, I refer interested parties to "net.nlang".
