If the topic of derivations of abbreviations interests you, you will be pleased to discover that "e.g." has been discussed ad nauseam in that newsgroup for the last two weeks. Aside from being in an inappropriate newsgroup, the posting to which I am responding had the additional disadvantages of spelling and translating the Latin incorrectly.
