It is indeed a batch style use of SMTP to deliver a bunch of messages in one direction and sometime later receive a bunch of responses. It was created and evolved by Mike O'Dell, Greg Minshall, and Alan Crosswell. It is used in some parts of BITNET, particularly at Berkeley.
