     One good serial number is an Ethernet address, where available.  
Some VisiCorp software available on 3COM EtherShare nets uses this
to limit the use of the software to a specified number of machines.
The nice thing about this is that while you could change your Ethernet
address and make two nodes the same by changing a PROM, if you did, 
your net would stop working.
