In diversity of styles, the 19th century is second only to our own. let's see... Full-fledged and late Beethoven Chopin liszt - purveyor of the the sublime and the ridiculous (alas, mostly the latter) Wagner - a major step in the exhaustion of the tonal system (at least as it was known then - and now in most schools) Brahms - much misunderstood then and now. Basically just a guy who loved to write music. It shows. Verdi - Spare me - except for "otello" and "Falstaff". If you haven't heard these, you don't know Verdi. mahler, R. Strauss, Debussy, etc. - Their best work was in the 20th century, so I guess we can leave them out - or did the 20th century begin in 1914? oops, Debussy just became a 19th century composer! Hardly a complete list. Just what do you mean by this "19th century" music? just another pouncer, Jeff Winslow
