I second the recommendation. It's an excellent book, which attempts to speak comprehensively about all music (western classical, contemporary, Indian, Blues, Rock, African, etc.). I don't know if it's still in print (I bought it nearly 10 years ago). If not, check your library. - Karl p.s. It's full of gorgeous pictures.
