Since the only remaining objections to forming a statistics newsgroup
seem to be about its name, I've created net.math.stat, since that name seemed
to be preferred by most of the people who expressed a choice.

Adam's comments about creating top-level groups are reasonable.  The
structure of newsgroups has been rather haphazard over the past 4
years, because nobody really expected that the net would grow this
large.  The newsgroup tree should really be redesigned.  I hope you
folks at USENIX can make some progress toward this.
