In teaching elementary programming the last couple of years, I've
noticed that when I use  e.g.  or  i.e.  on the board when writing
comments, many students don't know what they mean (can any English
teachers explain this?), but what is slightly more interesting, a fair
number think they are part of the programming language, or perhaps
operating system commands.
