All of the reasons mentioned are good reasons for keeping pets under control. I'll add another. It is just plain rude to let your dog relieve itself on a neighbor's lawn or in a public place. We have a large dog, which we confine to our back yard for this purpose. I am sick and tired of cleaning up after other people's dogs. If the idea of confining your pet bothers you, think about how you would feel if a neighbor came over and defecated on your front lawn. The principle is the same!
