I have found that when someone reacts intensely to me, and I perceive it as a feeling triggered by me, that's very flattering and even exciting. But, if that intensity seems to be triggered by a need or desperation, then it's not attractive at all. I think I make the distinction somewhat subconsciously. I think the person with the latter motivation for their intensity tends to have aura of pain around them that I think I usually detect just from talking to them.
