Of course people are plastic!

Plastic means pliable, capable of adapting to varying conditions, as well 
as being synthetic (your meaning).

I would like to hope that, as a result of the people I meet, I can change
for the better.  I'd hate to be the same as I was 10 or 15 years ago!
