David Gerrold's book on Star Trek, during his interview with Nichelle
Nichols, stated that Uhura was supposedly reasonably well up there in
the chain of command.  However, the network balked at the idea of having
a woman in charge of such a complex thing as a starship...a black woman,
in fact!  So they wrote her out of it.
