If you aren't familiar with the pattern of stars from a particular direction then you cannot tell which stars are familiar and which aren't. Also, since they were in the galactic energy barrier, it looked like they couldn't even see the stars in the galaxy. My guess at the reasons that the Medusans can intuitively navigate is because they can sense the fabric of space, and tell where they are from it.
