Okay, the way *I* heard it, the actress who played T'Pau had to use
her left hand to help her right hand into the Vulcan salute configuration.
So she got her salute all set up with her hand still in her lap,
then raised her pre-positioned hand for the greeting.
Nimoy, of course, can produce it on the fly without resorting to
camera closeups.
