I don't watch CAGNEY AND LACEY as a rule (though I have seen an episode here and
there), but I can answer part of the question, anyways. Tyne Daly (Dirty Harry's
partner from THE ENFORCER) and Loretta Swit were the duo in the pilot movie (I
can never remember which one is Cagney, and which one Lacey). When the movie
proved successful enough to warrant a regular show, Swit was unable to reprise
her role because M*A*S*H was still going. I don't recall who took up the role
of whichever one it was that Swit played. Yes, supposedly, the network dumped
whomever this was because she looked "too butch" or some such nonsense, and
Sharon Gless got the part. Tyne Daly has stayed in her part since the beginning.
