I've seen a SI 9800 controller just hang.  Go into the machine room and
press the "reset" switch.  If I/O starts again, you've probably found
your problem.  Our original 9800 got gradually worse over the space of
a year, and we eventually just had the controller replaced.  The problem
has essentially vanished.
