Herber posted concerning IBM 370 and ASCII. It is ASCII digits packed two per 16-bit word. As I recall, the 8086 supports it and has instructions like 'decimal adjust for addition' to take care of the extra octal 60 which always carries in addition, an extension of the carry correction for ordinary packed decimal.
