The determination probably has more to do with the attitude of the student than anything else - some people will respond better to a pizza and beer (after the flying is done, of course), other people it seems won't respond to anything other than violent screaming. Now, the real trick, as I see it, is to figure out what a particular student needs or will respond to and provide it. I guess that comes with experience. BTW - just by way of disclaimer, I'm not a CFI (yet); I do expect to have a Commercial liscense in a matter of a month or two, and CFI not too long after that.
