I used it on a chain for about two years, cleaning and rewaxing the chain every couple of months. Apparently that wasn't enough. After two years I replaced the chain and had to replace the freewheel with it (cf an earlier discussion in this group). This was under fairly dirty conditions. For instance, I had no place to take the bike in when it rained. I haven't waxed the chain on my new bike because it's too much of a pain -- it uses about two and a half chains spliced together. Maybe next time. I still think it's a good idea. Use Gulfwax. Available @ yr local hardware store.
