I suggest you use the money you save on ashtrays to buy a
good vacuum cleaner.  But what about the burns in the carpet
when the cigarettes are extinguished?

Seriously, it's your house, in which you have the right to
forbid smoking altogether.  If I ask for an ashtray, and you
say, "I'd prefer if you'd not smoke in my house," I won't
smoke in your house.  If you say, "Just drop the ashes on the
floor," I'll do exactly that, without a second thought.
