As a confirmed smoker (32 years, pipe) I feel that we smokers can be a little less obnoxious if we would all observe the following rules that I made for myself: 1 - Extinguish your cigarette, cigar, or pipe before entering another person's "turf" unless you know that they do not object to smoking. 2 - When in another person's turf silently observe your surroundings. If no ashtrays are in sight do not even ask if you can smoke, their absence usually advertises your host's preference. If they are present or if your host "lights up" then and only then ask "do you mind if I smoke?" and conduct yourself according to their wish. 3 - When smoking dispose of ashes or butts in an acceptable manner. Do not drop ANYTHING on the floor, lawn, walk, or driveway ( this practice is offensive to anyone who is used to neat, clean, and orderly surroundings ). There are probably other rules that need to be considered and I invite all of you to post them. You smokers should at least observe the above since failing to do so is just showing contempt for your host and you deserve any critizism you may receive. M. S. Simpkins
