DECnet can use Ethernet (along with serial lines, X.25 circuits, bus windows, etc) as a link level mechanism. Things like topology changes, status updates etc are handled by multicast messages. Memory only RSX systems can be booted across the Ethernet. You can also talk direct to the Ethernet using other protocol id's if you wish (simultaneous with DECnet usage). Talk to your local office about it.
