Both were definitely science fiction, and both were attempts to deal with important themes in a futuristic setting. I've never heard of a film version of "Brave New World" prior to the fairly recent TV version. Also, the film version of "1984" might be considered sf; it was made in the late Fourties or early Fifties, if my memory serves me (which it might not).
