  You are indeed correct in the fact that many of the Who's songs do sound
  quite different. Take their present album, It's Hard, and listen to the
  song "Cook's County". Then listen to a older version of "My Generation".
  Now, what in these two songs sounds anything alike ? Still, in most of
  the songs, their is some quality which I cannot put my finger on. I guess
  you would just call this quality (for lack of a better name) "Who-ish".
