They began their career doing the absolutely most abrasive hardcore I have ever heard (check out `H Eleanor' on the compilation `Keats rides a Harley') and have gradually moved back to their apparent C&W roots. The most recent offering, `Meat Puppets II', sounds like nothing I've ever heard -- highly recommended if don't care about technique, and are open to C&W as well as punk. Aging hippies may enjoy the cosmic lyrics, which recall the spirit of early (yikes) Grateful Dead. Last time I saw the Pups in SF, they were received very poorly. I'm starting to get sick of the close-mindedness of the hardcore movement around here. -michael `longhairs unite' ellis
