The code that is in the kernel to support this is an AT&T hack to attempt backward compatability and it does not work correctly in all cases. You will be MUCH better off in the long run if you bite the bullet and learn the horrific System V tty driver ioctl's and re-write whatever communication program (kermit in this case) with them.
